ADVANCED FELLOWSHIPS

The Royal Society and Academy of Medical Sciences are accepting applications to their Newton Advanced Fellowships. The Fellowships provide established international researchers with an opportunity to develop the research strengths and capabilities of their research group through training, collaboration and reciprocal visits with a partner in the UK. This award is open to international early career group leaders to develop their research by linking them with some of the best research groups in the UK.

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS

The Royal Society and Academy of Medical Sciences are accepting applications to their Newton International Fellowships. The scheme provides the opportunity for the best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world to work at UK research institutions for a period of two years.

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE CALL AND WORKSHOP

The Medical Research Council (MRC), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will shortly be launching a call for research proposals focusing on antibacterial resistance. On 24-26 November 2015, the funding agencies will hold a joint workshop in Shanghai with the intention of further scoping and refining the focus areas of the call. 

For further details of the programme and details of how to apply to attend the workshop, see here. The closing date for expression of interest in the workshop is 6th September.

PHD PLACEMENTS

The British Council and China Scholarship Council have launched theirPhD PlacementProgramme. The Programme provides grants to sponsor PhD students from the UK and China to spend a period of study of between three and 12 months at higher education institutions in China or the UK. Placements must start between January and December 2016.

Applications from UK institutions are being accepted now until 10th October. See here for more details. The application procedure for Chinese applicants will launch soon.

ANNOUNCEMENTS TO COME…

The coming months will be a busy period for Newton announcements with several high level visits and dialogues between the UK and China. Look out for some exciting news.

WHAT IS THE NEWTON FUND?

The UK-China Research Innovation Partnership Fund, part of the UK's Newton Fund, will strengthen China and the UK's research and innovation partnerships. Launched by UK Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit to China in December 2013, the China partnership has a total value of £200 million over 5 years. Individual projects and applications are managed through programmes awarded under the Newton Fund. Programmes are between Chinese and British institutions or Delivery Partners that are responsible for promoting the calls.

The Newton Fund is a £375 million fund over 5 years and is part of the UK's commitment to promote research and innovation initiatives to strengthen social and economic development of emerging countries.
