The Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh has asked me to send you the letter below, containing three wonderful Chinese Learning Opportunities. The third, the Chinese Language Workshop on 3 June, is in partnership with CISS, the Confucius Institute for Scotland's Schools at the University of Strathclyde. Save the date!

Three Chinese Language Learning Opportunities

I am writing to let you know of three upcoming and recently notified opportunities which should be of interest to those who are teaching or learning Chinese.

  3. Chinese Language Workshop in the University of Edinburgh on 12 June 2015

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION 18 MAY 2015: Chinese Test Summer Cam

Those students who have taken part in a HSK and HSKK exams have the opportunity to spend two sponsored weeks in China from 10-23 July 2015.  As well as having taken an HSK/HSKK test applicants must be non-Chinese students age 14-22.

This is a great opportunity as all expenditure in China will be covered by Confucius Institutes Headquarters (Hanban). This includes meals, accommodation, local transport, group activities, tours in China and Chinese domestic insurance. Participants are required to pay for their own international airfare, Chinese visa application and international travel insurance.

While individual students can apply for this programme, if your school has six or more applicant one teacher is eligible to apply as chaperone.

SAVE THE DATE 04 JUNE 2015:  Shanghai Education Exhibition 4 June 09.30-2.30pm, The Hub

A group of 35 educational institutions are planning a day long visit to Edinburgh to set up a special exhibition on opportunities at International Schools and Universities in the city of Shanghai.  This exhibition is being organised by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.  The event aims to promote Sino-Scottish educational co-operation.

The exhibition is the seventh such event though this is the first time the exhibition has come to Scotland.  It provides an opportunity for students and practitioners to meet with a wide array of providers secondary and higher education opportunities in Shanghai.

SAVE THE DATE 12 JUNE 2015:  Chinese Language Workshop in the University of Edinburgh

Teaching Chinese in Scotland: Pedagogy Meets the Languageis a one day event for those involved in the teaching of Chinese. Taking place on Friday 12 June 2015 at 50 George Square, University of Edinburgh, this workshop is jointly organised by the Confucius Institute for Scotland (in the University of Edinburgh) and the Confucius Institute for Scottish Schools (in the University of Strathclyde).

There will be a number of parallel workshops running on the day. Topics include

  • Teaching tones

  • Teaching listening and speaking

  • Teaching reading and writing

  • Teaching Chinese grammar

  • Resources for teaching

  • Classroom management

  • SQA assessments for Chinese

  • 1+2 approach to language learning

The workshops will be run by experienced teachers and trainers from Chinese Studies, University of Edinburgh; Confucius Institute for Scottish Schools; School of Oriental and African Studies; Heriot-Watt University; and Dollar Academy.
