Chinese Cultural Classes at the Eric Liddell Centre

The Eric Liddell Centre in partnership with the Confucius Institute at Heriot Watt University are offering Chinese Cultural Classes this Autumn.

A 10 week block of classes are £40 which can be booked at reception in the Eric Liddell Centre.

Chinese Brush Painting

Wednesdays: 4-5.30pm (South Wing)
This course will introduce you to the history of Chinese painting, the common techniques used when painting with Chinese soft brushes and ink will then follow. Participants will learn how to paint flowers (eg. peony and trumpet creeper) and animals such as the panda and goldfish.

Chinese Calligraphy
Fridays; 4-5.30pm (South Wing)

This course starts by introducing this traditional Chinese art, its history and an explanation of how Chinese philosophy influences this art form. This will then move on to practical issues, such as common soft brush techniques and ink control.

Mahjong Workshop
Fridays; 4-6pm (max. 8 people per session) (Eltham Suite)
This very tactical game is usually played with 4 players.
It is a combination of skill and luck with an exciting element of unpredictability.

Strategy, planning your next move and reacting to what the other players are doing makes this game fun, stimulating the cognitive processes of the brain. Learning this game will keep your mind flexible and sharp.

Chinese Beginner’s Class

Thursdays; 4-6pm (Eltham Suite)
This course is designed for people interested in learning about Chinese culture and language. You will learn some basic phrases which will assist in day to day conversation.
By the end of the course, you are expected to have mastered 45 commonly used Chinese characters and will know some very simple Chinese expressions.

Chinese arts & crafts activities will be offered in the last 30 minutes of each session.

This course is your first step to becoming familiar with the Chinese language.
