Shanghai Fashion Show at Edinburgh Fringe & Chinese Literature Star at Book Festival

The Confucius Institute are honoured to organise two fantastic events at the Edinburgh Fringe and Book Festival this year.

From Shanghai with Love - Fashion Exhibition/Show, 24 August and 25 August

After the sold-out success of 2017, Donghua Edinburgh Centre for Creative Industries is set to return to the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Join us in the stunning Playfair Library on either Friday 24th or Saturday 25th August for this combined exhibition and fashion show. Discover elegant, enduring and electrifying Qipao fashion, Shanghai Style, through the ages and into the future. Working with Donghua University's Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation, this event is based on the ever-evolving, iconic Qipao garment. The exhibition which can be seen pre or post show, features Qipao from the 1910s to the 1930s. On the runway show you will see contemporary and futuristic Qipao designs using the latest high tech materials and techniques presented by professional models choreographed to a great soundtrack.

Yan Lianke - A Master of Chinese Literature, Book Festival 27 August 20:30-21:30

We are very fortunate to be able to invite one of China's renowned novelists, Yan Lianke, winner of two of China's most prestigious literary honours, the Lu Xun and the Lao She prizes, to this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival.

At his first UK Festival visit, Yan will launch his new book The Day the Sun Died. Typically satirical, His novel skewers the optimism of President Xi Jinping's 'Chinese Dream' as hero Li Niannian tries to persuade the reluctant sun to rise again.
