European & External Affairs Committee

30 January 2013

Scottish-Parliament-Banner.jpgI took part in an oral session of the Scottish Parliament's European and External Affairs Committee's Inquiry into the Scottish Government's 1 + 2 policy last week. I was convinced already of the need to introduce language teaching as early as possible in our primary - and nursery - schools, but the experience of marshalling the arguments, looking at what the rest of the world is doing successfully, and hearing Professor Antonella Sorace's vibrant responses, impressed on me the need to act now, whatever the practical difficulties. SCEN is naturally behind this programme, while making the strong point that Chinese should be one of the suite of languages in our schools. For those who are interested, I attach my written responses to the questions asked by the Committee.  Reporting in our national papers is too negative and seems to me to ignore all those who argue for change. Let us seize the moment!

There are many opportunities in the coming term to strengthen our interest in Chinese and learning about China. Please look at our Events section for details.
